Geographic Applications

  • ArcGIS 10.4 or 10.5 (released in December 2016) with specially-designed GMMS Wizards: The latest geographic software from Esri with custom wizards designed to help you quickly use key ministry datasets along with your own geographical information. The wizards open most of the geographic layers in the GMMS and them simplifies managing these layers by asking several questions about the area covered by the map and the type of map desired, then presenting a set of controls which allow the user to adjust the level of detail desired in several categories of geographic information.

  • Global Geocoder: A simple application designed to help you geographically locate any address on the planet! This application takes input from a table such as an Excel spreadsheet, which contains address information and creates a latitude/longitude coordinate for the address. The program can use address data from Google, MapQuest, OpenStreetMap contributors. and US Census to determine the latitude/longitude coordinate.

Features

With the Global Ministry Mapping System (GMMS) you can:

  • Start from over 200 GMI-produced maps and modify them to suit your specific needs.
  • Build your own maps from over 100 layers of provided geographic information.
  • Change colors, fill patterns, line weights, symbols, etc. as you prefer; and vary point symbols, fill patterns, etc. as a function of your data.
  • Pan and zoom maps to any part of the earth, change map projections, add multiple map views to a page, add titles, text notations, and legends.
  • Add your own geographic and statistical data: geographic and statistical data provided can be edited if needed, or you can import additional data from local sources, or you can digitize geographic data and enter statistical data directly in the mapping system.
  • Include charts, images, and other graphics on your maps; and include images (such as topography, aerial photography, or satellite images) as layers in your maps; global shaded relief (shadows of hills) and colored elevation (green valleys, white mountaintops, etc) are included.
  • Automatically generate and place text labels to avoid overlaps.
  • Make layers partially transparent, allowing display, for example, of both a statistically-generated theme (such as Bible translation status of language groups) and landform information (such as shaded relief) on the same map.
  • Import a wide range of geographic data formats including free data from Esri's resource center.
  • Work with optional ArcGIS Extensions to perform advanced spatial analysis, statistical analysis, 3D analysis, and map publishing. Export maps to ten different file types including PDF with advanced features.
  • Use the Mapping wizard to automate map creation.

Databases: GMMS combines geopolitical and ethnolinguistic data with content from top ministries.

The GMMS provides information found nowhere else on locations of ethnolinguistic peoples, and provides global coverage of first-level (states, provinces) sub-national political subdivisions, city and town locations, and over 50 additional layers of information that can be used to give geographic context to your maps. Also available are statistical/demographic databases from many research sources in the Christian ministry community, including Wycliffe, Operation World, the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, People Group Mapping Project, and Joshua Project.
