Seamless Digital Chart of the World Base Map
Available Now!
A globally seamless adaptation of the Digital Chart of the World (Vector Map Level 0, Edition 5) in ESRI shapefile format, with country polygons and updated first-level subdivisions of countries.
Features
Complete documentation in PDF format
- Based on the best publicly available global-coverage digital base map (VMap Level 0, edition 5)
- All DCW layers represented as global-extent shapefiles, eliminating duplicate layers and other library-boundary artifacts
- Features typically drawn with line edges (political areas, lakes, etc) have been merged across tiles, eliminating most tile-boundary artifacts
- Sub-national administrative divisions are substantially updated from those included in VMap0 ed. 5.
- Country boundaries (no longer included in VMap 0) have been created from sub-national administrative divisions
- Faster drawing than original VPF format
- ArcGIS 8/9 comatible layer files provide symbology
- Example ArcGIS 8/9 compatible .mxd project files provide a starting point for setting up needed layers to produce a complete map.
- DCW attributes preserved in optimized-length fields

Detailed Description:
Complete documentation in PDF format
This product is a globally seamless adaptation of the U.S. Government's Digital Chart of the World (Vector Smart Map Level 0 [VMap0], Edition 5) produced by Global Mapping International in ESRI shapefile format, with added country polygons and updated first-level subdivisions of countries. The underlying Digital Chart of the World was developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) of the U.S. government. GMI has merged the DCW into seamless, global shapefile layers (the original consists of four separate libraries, each divided into dozens of tiles).
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap0). The VMap0 data was compiled from the Operational Navigational Chart (ONC) series of air navigation maps with a scale of 1:1,000,000.
Full information about VMAP Level 0, edition 5 is contained in MIL-PRF-89039 "PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION - VECTOR SMART MAP (VMap) Level 0" as amended (VMAP0_spec.pdf)
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate
cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap 0 when using
the shapefiles in ArcGIS version 8.3 and above.
System Requirements
- GIS software capable of reading ESRI shapefile format geographic data. (Note: this data includes very complex, high vertex count data. It has been tested with ESRI's ArcView 8.2, 8.3, and 9.0. Users of other systems should contact GMI for sample data to verify that your software is capable of handling objects of sufficient complexity).
- Windows system to run self-extracting .exe installation files from distribution disc. This need not be the computer running the GIS system, but must be able to write data to a location accessible by the GIS system.
Limitations
- The conversion process used to convert the DCW from VPF format did not convert text annotation features. These are in most cases redundant with information contained in attributes of the corresponding feature, but some label size and placement information has been lost.
- A few DCW feature classes for which we could find no cartograhpic use were omitted, including:
- depthl and polbndp from the \bnd directory
- dqline from the \dq and other directories
- the libref directory
- cutfill from the \phys directory.
- In a few cases, the first-level administrative divisions of countries could not be merged into a single country polygon without exceeding the shapefile vertex limits of ArcView 8.x. In these cases, countries have been represented as multiple polygons. Where possible, we have divided country polygons along lines of natural geographic discontinuity (e.g. separating offshore islands or dividing along major rivers).
Licensing
Standard SDCW licensing permits use of the data at a single (or optionally, at multiple) GIS end-user workstations, and distribution of maps created on licensed workstations in either print or electronic form with only minor attribution requirements. See the standard license (in PDF format) for details. Custom licensing for large GIS sites, multi-user map servers, or other situations not covered by the standard license can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
